With more than two million visitors each year, Philips Arena in Atlanta is the nation’s top concert a and sports arena and the second busiest in the world, according to Peter Sorckoff, director of game operations for the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Thrashers. Many of those are loyal fans that regularly come to see the Hawks and Thrashers play, said Sorckoff, whose staff markets both teams. “My team is what I call the smoke-and-mirrors group,” he said. “We are directly responsible for packaging the experience so when fans leave, they feel they got value for their dollar.” Giving back is also important and players from both teams spent more than 1,000 hours in community service last year.

Kim Jones of the Community Foundation of West Georgia (www.cfwg.net) provided an inspiring look into the workings of the foundation. Established in 2002, the foundation grew to $21.5 million at the end of 2007, of which $7.2 million were endowment funds. Very critical community work is made possible through the work of the foundation.

Carrollton Native Mark Parkman Shares Insights on Televising the Olympics

Mark Parkman provided us with an intriguing behind the scenes look at the processes involved in televising the Olympic Games. Mark, son of Rotarian David Parkman, is an '83 graduate of Carrollton High School and an '87 graduate of the University of Georgia. He has worked on seven Olympic Games and won an Emmy for coverage of the Salt Lake City Games. Mark oversees the Operations of Olympic Broadcasting Services.
